This is an interesting thread. My experience is not much different than some of you in my 2014 CX-5. Driving in the early morning and heard a huge pop. Sounded like a gun shot. Came out in the afternoon and a crack came right up from the bottom middle of the windshield and veered left towards the drivers side edge. Dealership did the pen test and said he found a pin head of an impact. My only issue with that explanation is I have never seen such a small pin head sized impact cause a crack. Also the nearest car was easily 200 feet in front of me in another lane. Seems suspect so many windows are cracking in the middle.

1300 miles on our 2016 GT with SCBS. Started right above the brake camera, and u-shaped towards the driver side. No help from the dealer, and $500 deductible through progressive.

Now just yesterday my windshield broke as well. Called my insurance company and got a brand new windshield OEM for no out of pocket!. Glass insurance is a must with this car.

Will be installing third windshield in our CX-5 Grand Touring 2013. Owned other Mazdas and never had this problem. First crack was from a tiny chip on drivers side edge. Replaced windshield in Nov 2014. In June 2015, crack initiating from center bottom edge while car was parked and we were in church. Glass installer used ball point pin and identified a tiny, tiny chip (could barely see with unaided eye) and said crack started there. Apparently Mazda and some other manufacturers have a problem with overstressed windshields (thin and overstressed in frame opening). Just do an internet search. This will be my last Mazda until they resolve this issue as I don't want to be replacing windshields every year, insurance covered or otherwise.

My answer is a simple one.... Buy a extra windshield and store the extra one aside for use after each crack.

Thumbs down

This is the wifeys car and she first just noticed the line going across the windshield when she returned to her car after being parked in a parking garage. A week later we noticed the tiny little rock hit that wasnt there before. Then she heard a crunch-like noise today while on the highway and then this bubble like glass separation appeared. So 3 different types of breakages on her car within 45 days.
Its a 2014 Touring w/sensors. approx 32000 miles. Nice job Mazda, whats next the top layer of the windshield will start to separate. Ive never seen 3 distinct types of damages appearing out of no where on a vehicle and all within 45 days. Sweet too that glass is on back order and takes 30-90 days to arrive.

1st windshield replacement in 1 year 10 months @ 32k.
Thoughts?

Windshields are a part of structure, and you need to avoid potholes, bumps, jolts. Also I personally believe that these windshields may be thin.

I replaced my a second time in about two years. Now you can get NON-OEM windshields. I have the sport, manual version and that might have helped.
My hope is that this NON-Mazda windshield might be a bit thicker and could hold better.
This is my last Mazda

I just wanted to add some input as Safelite was going to install their non OEM about a month ago and found out that the non OEM did not work with the sensors and had to install OEM only. Which took another month to come in.
