Default Radiator Fan switch/temp sensor gremlin

323 "based" 1989 Mercury Tracer wagon 5spd with 160K.

Just bought it, notice the radiator fan was always on.

My 1000pg Merc factory manual says if the sensor is disconnected the RadFan comes on, so I replaced the sensor pug(single flat connector) with a new one from 1980s GM toyota(Kraegens didnt have a listing and the part# changed during production year).

Fan was still on all the time.

Then a few days later the fan won't come on and will let the car overheat.

PS-Guess what happens if you engage Cruise Control when car is rolling but out of gear? Motor revs way up suddenly. Seems dangerous, are they supposed to be like that?
