alternator replcement

I have a 1999 626 4cly, how do I remove the alternator? My Haynes repair manual says to remove the front transverse crossmember (see chapter 12) Chapter 12 is the Chassis electrical system and there is no mention of the front transverse crossmember. It also mentions I may have to remove the forward section of the exhaust WTF? Is there an easier way?
