Default 1999 626 starting problems

Hey Folks,
Looking for some pointers/guidance for starting problems with my daughters 1999 626.
It'll start, she'll drive away and stop some wheres and then it may or may not start again after sitting for 5-10 minutes. It stalled at a traffic light recently and wouldn't restart, had to be towed. Garage said it was dirty intake air sensor. This didn't fix the problem. The car is costing her money she can't afford right now unfortunately, so I'm trying to help.
I installed new plugs, wires, cap & rotor last summer. It has a newish air filter that looks clean, I cleaned the air sensor as per instructions found on the internet last summer when the car generated a cel, the cleaning solved the problem.
Currently no cel.
Friday night she drove to the bank 10km from home, went in came out and it wouldn't start (the engine will crank powerfully, or will catch but stall immediately)
A few hours later I passed by and it started and I drove it back home no problem.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
Let me know

It could be the coilpack.
Also the charging system could be involved. I know it cranks well but a bad alternator could throw the computer for a loop.
Clean all the contacts at the battery and the alternator. Also clean all the ground connections you can find under the hood. It is like shooting in the dark.

The EGR valve and the throttle body may need a cleaning. The idle air control valve may be sticking. Clean it as well. A good fuel system cleaner might help.

I like CRC throttle body cleaner for the cleaning jobs.

Read the "unofficial user's guide to the Mazda Protege" in the protege forum. What's in there applies to your vehicle too.

Hey guys,

Thanks for responding, been super busy at work and my daughter hasn't been around.
It's rained all week here and been much cooler, she says no problem all week, started everyday every wheres. Don't know if that info makes any difference.

Also I bought a blue tooth BDII for reading any cel that she may have now or in the future. All kinds of tests possible with the torque android app.

Two things showed up but don't what to make of it.

TID: $02 CID:$11
Lean to rich sensor threshold voltage
Min 32,850 Max 32,686
Current 0 NOT OK

TID: $02 CID:$21
Lean to rich sensor threshold voltage
Min 32,850 Max 32,686
Current 65,535 NOT OK

Any chance someone understands this, I googled but doesn't help me much.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hmmm, an app. This app doesn't give you the OBDII code but some stored data.
I am guessing that these are O2 sensor messages. O2 sensors switch over a certain voltage threshold depending on the presence of O2. The data don't tell me if we have a rich or lean condition but it tells that the sensors send data that are out of range.
I am guessing $11 is bank 1 and $21 is bank 2. That can only be true if it is a 6 cylinder engine.

Do us a favor and get conventional digital trouble codes. Get the vehicle to a parts store for a free scan and report the number(s).
And give us more info: engine, miles, automatic?

Lean conditions are more common then rich conditions. I would suspect a vacuum leak somewhere.

2L is the 4 cylinder engine. The sensors are most likely the pre-cat sensor and the after- cat sensor.

Check the air intake hose for cracks in the accordeon section. You need to bend the hose to see the cracks. Duct tape it if there are any.
