Cool Engine Got Wet - Check Engine Light Stays On

I have a 1999 Miata and I was cleaning under the hood and apparently I went overboard. The engine got some water on top of the block and when I restarted the car it sputtered at first but after a couple minutes it seemed to run fine.

While it was misfiring the check engine light came on and now it will not shut off even after I have driven it close to an hour.

The car only has 28,000 miles on it.

1. Turn the courtesy light on (leave a door open).
2. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery.
3. Wait apprx. 30 secs. and reconnect battery.
Start engine, do a little drivearound, see how things go. You will have to reset your clock and radio station tuning presets.

You might have to do more than that with the radio. Fortunately, there are already some threads on the forum for dealing with a locked-out Mazda stereo.

Oldeng your right the fault code was most likely a emission fault code , the code is stored in the volatile memory of the p.c.m so removing the power should cure the fault.
