New 2006 owner, power sliding doors

Hi Folks.  I just bought a 2006 MPV(YES!) with power sliding doors that act a little different from what the manual says:
 
1)The manual says the outside handle will open OR CLOSE the door.  It works fine on a closed door but it doesn't activate an open door.  Is that normal?
 
2)When I activate the power locks from the drivers door, the sliding doors don't lock if open.  They lock properly if closed.  Is that normal?
