arite, i was trying to replace my rear pads but... when i got to where the piston needs to be pushed in, it wouldnt go in (and i tried both sides). now is it supposed to be twisted in it in. i only asked because right before, i did my sis breaks and thats what was needed. So am i doing something wrong? if anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated thanx

did you have your ebrake on when doing the brakes? or step on them at all while the caliper or rotor off?
I did this back when I was 16.
I had to take off my caliper and unscrew the bleeding bolt and lines. then take the end of the 3/4inch socket and lightly tap the piston back in with a hammer.
maybe babyhuey will have a suggestion other then that?

You don't say what year your Miata is, but don't the rear pistons need to be screwed or twisted in to get them to back off... not like the old days when you could just push the piston(s) back in?
I believe (I've heard) there's a tool that can be rented/borrowed from parts stores that'll do the job for you, but I personally have no experience w/it.

my e-brake wasn't on and i didnt step on the breaks. i also thought it would have to be twisted in but the piston is a hollow cylinder. my miata is the 1994 model

On the backside of the caliper you should see two 14mm bolts. One bolts the parking cable bracket to the caliper and the other does not look like it does anything. Take this bolt/plug out and underneath will be a set screw that I think requires a 4mm allen wrench to turn. Rotate this set screw counterclockwise untill the piston is fully retracted. You will feel considerable increased resistance and piston will stop being pulled in when this happens. Not too hard or you will strip out the gear teeth. Once pads are installed and everything is bolted back up, start turning the rotor by hand and rotate this set screw clockwise untill rotor just gets locked up. Now turn set screw back counterclockwise 1/2 turn, make sure rotor turns easily, reinstall the 14mm bolt/plug and start on the other side.

The rear breakks need to be screwed in because of the E-Brake assembly.
