I have relatively new M3 hatchback, 2.3l automatic. It has now about 1.2k miles. I picked it up as a compact economy car but I am unpleasantly surprised by its thirst. I am constantly getting about 19-20 mpg. Driving about 2/3 town and 1/3 highway and I am not a real racer. This is only some 230 miles per tank (15 gal). Customer service is promising some improvement after breakout (close to 7k miles) but I can hardly believe it can be better than some 1 or 2 miles. I would be very interested hearing some of your experience regarding the gas mileage of this model.

I have an 06 3i w/2.0L, my gas mileage is great, i am getting right about 30mpg, that is a mix of highway/city driving and I do drive fast alot of the time. I am able to get over 300miles on a tank of gas.

there must be a problem, check air filter and the housing, check spark plugs, tire psi, fuel leak, wheel alignment and oil level. I hope this helps you.
Hmm, My 3 wagon (opps - hatchback!) has 26k miles and my best mileage hwy has been 27 mpg. I average between 23 & 25 mpg in combined. If I recall correctly, Mazda says the EPA mileage estimates are 25 city & 31 hwy. Notice these are estimates and require you to be allergic to your gas pedal. My size 14 shoes are heavy so it needs the extra support offered by the floorboard/firewall. I guess I'm addicted to the acceration offered by the big four engine. Anyway, if you drive slow and avoid accerating at a normal pace, you should be able to improve your mileage. However, if you drive your new car in the matter in which it was designed (read - sport) then you will be able to enjoy the occational mpg highs but will always enjoy the drive!

I have a 2006 Mazda 3, 2.3L Auto...and i only get in the mid to high 20's for MPG,..but...i do have to be honest,..i stick my foot in it quite abit, and i have wider tires, which doesn't help matters either.

Hello, I am new to this forum......and have MPG issues
I just bought a 2006 Mazda3, 2.3 hatchback.
The car had 96 miles on it and a full tank from the dealer. I had to refuel after 270 miles (so total miles on car at refill was 366 miles). At 15 MPG, I only got 18 MPG. That was dissapointing. My SUV that i traded in got that for mileage and that was the whole reason for the trade-in.
Now that I see from the posts here, and after I read my manual, i understand that there is a break-in period. I cannot imagine that it will take until 7,000 mi that it will get better. I suspect that after 1500mi when I bring the car in for the first oil change it will get much better. But can it get 10 MPG better??? that is a ridiculous amount of gain for a break-in period.
I am now on a new full tank and i will see what i average with this one, and will report back to you all about the results.

i heard that the break in period was only supposed be 1000mi, after i passed that mark i started drifting and street racing and my gas milage seems to fine i get about 35miles to the gallon, but due to my consant driving, drifting and streetracing i have to constantly fill up but i dont complain even though gas is $2.17.

Actually the break in period for most cars is 2000 so you'll notice an change in mpg(miles driven divided by gallons filled up) after your 1st oil change, the 2.3 get worse gas mileage compared to the 2.0 because of that little .3 change, blame computers, i believe the 2.0 gets 28 city/35 highway the 2.3 gets 26/32 on an MT. and i dont mean to be mean or anything tracker, but you cant drift fwd you can only power break, its the rear wheel driver in me that got irritated from it, and becareful wit street racing kids, cuz a cop can crush your car w/o question if he wanted to and i believe we carry a 14.5 gas tank so yeah basically 15 gal

when i say drift i dont mean like what they can do Formula D (G4tv) there is no way in hell i could even be remotely as good as them, what i mean is that i power break just too lazy to spell to type it or i have to hurry up b4 my teacher checks on my computer. oh and i get 25miles not 35 my fault.

eh its koo man, i kno alot simply cuz my friends make fun of me for alwayz havin import 4 bangers that burn their v8 trucks and STILL get better gas mileage and i meant power slide, power break HA my mind slipped wit dat word now back to my lashings for my IMPUDENCE dont b wreakless wit your street racing man, i dont approve it, but im not gonna tell you to stop either, jus hate to see bystandards gettin hurt and a good lookin car go to waste

we have fun with our streetracin, we do it in a disclosed location that only we know about, and we take as many safety measures as possible, so there are no other civilians coming and going, but we do get occasional people who like to stand in the middle of the street while the racers are going so fast that they cant drive in straight line, but then again there is as much danger in that as in casual driving.

ok, i have to revise my previous numbers...
i was counting the entire 15 gallons when i only used 11.8 gallons
My first full tank with my new 2006 mazda 3, 2.3 hatchback gave me 22.8 MPG
I just filled up this morning, and I got 23.99 MPG.
This is a brand new car, just off the lot. I hope that I get much better mileage after the breakin period. I expect around 28 MPG. i think that is achievable. Almost all of my driving is highway driving, back and forth to work. I rarely go anywhere else, but I do have some limited city driving.
I will report again after I get my 1500 mile oil change/service.

30mpg with Manual tranny, f*** thats the only reason i feel bad to own a tranny, gas mileage.
Well my turn, 2006, 3s, Auto, 45000 miles now, have tested my mileage in different ways.
1. Stock 87 Octane gas, 21 mpg city, 23 mpg highway
2. Stock 93 Octane gas, 23 mpg city, 25 mpg highway
3. K&N filter with 87 Octane, 20 mpg city, 22 mpg highway
4. K&N filter with 93 Octane, 21 mpg city, 23 mpg highway
But the most significat gas mileage i had was almost 26 mpg, stock on 93 Octane, mostly highway.

U know, yesterday iwanted to figure out what is the difference the way you hold your foot to accellerate, may sound crazy, but yesterday on the way home i decided to drive very slow and gentle keeping my RPMs low, well holding your foot little further from the pedal and depresing it with the toe side of your foot rises your RPMs faster than if you accelerate by placing hill side as close as possible, doing so slowely both i have noticed how faster RPMs rise using mostly of your toe's to accelerate. Than all the time i thought the gears in auto shift usually about 2500 RPMs, but doing it slowely and getting to 1800 RPMs the gear will shift, accelerating with your whole foot slowely almost all the gears will shift at 1800 RPMs on auto, BUT u have to drive amost like some grandma for whome it takes 30 sec to get from 0-60. Just wanted to mention it, tried it and honestly will not do it again, because it took me twice the time to get home than usual.

I hope I get better then I am hearing here. Just picked up the car. 2.0 touring with a 5 speed. The Slk gets 24 to 27 in combined driving all day long. I am hoping for mid 30's on the highway. I am taking a trip to Vancouver BC this week so i will get a first quick read soon. I know it is early and it still needs to break in.
