I took my '05 3 Hatchback to my local Mazda dealer for regular service and they came back and told me I needed new tires and a new clutch. I understand the tires; they are the notorious OEM Goodyear Eagle tissue paper that are now bald at 23K miles. What I don't get is the clutch diagnosis. The mechanic made a big point of marking my score card in red and said I should immediately have the clutch serviced - for $1200. I've driven the car responsibly since new and have not noticed any slipping or problems with the clutch; but now of course I'm hearing "voices" and babying the thing like its going to fail at any moment.
What's the life expectancy of an M3 clutch?
Has any one had pre-mature clutch failure with their 3?
How is clutch wear diagnosed without physically inspecting it?
If it has to be replaced, what are the best after market choices for a mild performance upgrade?

Generally a clutch is diagnosed by driving to see if it slips, by driving the car up to 3rd gear then slowing down to approx 20mph or so a accelerating again if they rpms climb and they car does not move faster then your clutch is slipping they're usually is a burning smell along with this test.Also by feel of the clutch
pedal if the clutch engages when the pedal is past the halfway point of travel then start to baby it. The clutch pedal also get stiffer.
