locate engine number from the engine block

hi,
 
I just got this 94 mazda 323 astina and I happened to have this car registered to local transport bureau. i have seen the body number and the engine number etch on the left side under the hood. I just looking for the engine number on the engine itself but cannot locate it. can you give me an idea where could i see it. I need to stencil it so I can have it registered.

Mazda almost always engraves the engine number on the back of the engine near the transmission bellhousing. Not sure which side on your engine but just look for a smooth machined area. See diagram and picture below.
