so this is probably a very simple question, but I want to buy a new deck for my car so i can hook up my mp3 player via an aux input in the front.  I was wondering if installing a deck in a 1998 protege is something I can easily do on my own, or if i should fork out the extra cash to have a professional install it.  So yeah if i bought a deck could i install it myself and if so how?  And also would I need any extra parts to make sure it all fits and stuff.  thanks

It's really not that bad if you have some mechanical ability.  There are a few things out there that will make the job easier for you.  First, you want to get a single din faced radio which is the same size as what is in your car now.  Then, go to www.scosche.com.  There you can find out where you can get the DT-1 FD radio removal tool.  $5.  This will allow you to get your existing radio out easy.  The you can get a connector to connect an aftermarket radio to your factory radio harness.  PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK THIS, but I believe it is P/N MA02B.  What you do with the connector is attach using the instructions to connect it to your aftermarket radio, then plug it in to the factory harness.  Check out where you buy the radio.  They may have the connection parts too...

so i did a bit of research and think i understand how to do this.  only problem is removing the radio.  i looked into the radio removal tool, the one thats kind of U shaped and its for decks with 2 holes on each side, and my deck does not have this.  so im wondering, without ripping the dash to pieces, how do i get the stock stereo out.  thanks!

There are two covers on either side of the deck.  They did a good job of hiding them..  Use a knife to carefully lift these covers off, the holes are underneath.
