I4 Mazda 626 transmission interchange (what fits?) automatic

Hi,

I have a 1996 i4 Mazda 626 and the automatic transmission has gone bad. I have a wrecked 1999 Ford Contour with the 4 cylinder engine; I have seen listings that say the Contour has the same transmission, does it fit? if not, does anyone know what needs to be done to make it fit. Does anyone know which transmissions will fit in my car? I just need to get it back on the road.

id sugest getting a haynes manuel to start off with if your goign to do this yourself! and it may have tranmission specs in there im not sure i dont remeber...

Removing and installing the transmission will not be a problem for me, what I need to find out is which transmissions are interchangeable? I can get a 1999 Ford Contour transmission, I have heard this transmission fits, with lots of work? I am trying to figure out what that work is?
