I have a 98 mx-6 non turbo. The car would just die when ideling or going down the road. After alot of trial and error I found out the problem was my control module in the distributor. So I put a new one in and it started right up. But now runs real bad like its out of time. But I timed it and thats not it. Please give me any ideas you have.

check the basics... compression, timing, etc. does it idles rough with or without the a/c on? Need to figure the exact symptoms before moving on.

It idles rough without the ac on. I checked the timing and thats not it. Dont know much about compression. It starts right up but runs way to rough to drive.

ok, does it idle rough or does it ride rough? 2 different issues altogether.

It can be a number of things. Not knowing the condition of the car, I would go in process of elimination.
1. check plugs, wires, fuel filter, PCV valve, etc.
2. No codes from the PCM?
3. Bad vacum hose can cause this (rough idle, lack of power, etc)

Did you double check the routing of the spark plug wires? Firing order is 1-3-4-2.

I doubt the car would even run with wires on the wrong plugs.....

These are the things I have replaced. Plugs, wires, fuel filter, fuel pump, ign control module, distributor cap, rotor, vacum hose, pcv valve, I have timed it, I checked the fuses. As far as the fireing order is that 1 3 4 2 from the left? Thanks for all the help.

My book says the firing order is 1 2 3 4 from the left for a 89 mazda mx-6 non turbo

1-3-4-2 basic for all 4 cyl engines. Starts at the front of the engine.

Thanks for all the input. Going through the check list I found out that the new wires I bought were not fitting right on the plugs. Thats what I get for buying cheap. Anyway I crimpt them so they would fit tight, and it fired right up, runing smooth. Thanks all, talk to you guys later.
