im a newbie to the mazda forum so sorry if this subject has been covered..i was cruising in my rx7 turbo 2 the other day around 4000 rpms and i heard a popping sound and the engine started running terrible with backfires. i parked the car at my house and started it back up and it will only idle if i keep my foot on the throttle and it will back fire like crazy but if i give it some gas and get the rpms above 3500 it will run just fine with no back fires but as soon as i let off the throttle it just backfires like crazy and stumbles back to idle and dies if i take my foot off the gas. any help would be greatly appreciated i love this car..

Hmmm.  Sorry but this sounds like a problem only another TII owner can truly answer.  My opinion would be to check for a bad plug, wires, coil, or dirt clogging an emissions valve, but I don't know for sure.

tonight im gonna check compression, plug wires, coils ect ill tell ya the results. im hoping one of the vacuum lines came off the bottom of the intake manifold. kinda hard to find the problem since all the sensors have been blocked off with plates and most of all vacuum lines have been deleted as well.

check for a stuck fuel injector or a clogged up fuel pump.

Hate to say it, but it sounds like a broken Apex seal.

i was trying to avoid using the A-word just yet, but it is very possible. check the compression.

Yeah, but from the symptoms that the car is showing, all fingers point to a broken Apex seal. Hopefully it isn't, but from what the OP said, I am pretty sure that is what happened.
