hey, i am new here and am looking to buy my first car, i am looking at a 2000 protege, 4 cylinder with 125 000 miles on it and am concerned about the mileage, whats the engine life on a protege and transmission life provided that oil and other fluids were changed recently?

I've seen Protege's for sale with over 190K miles on them....not sure if that's typical, but just about any car will last if you keep up the regular maintenance.
 
Take a good look at the fluids in the car before you buy. (both condition and level)  Engine oil should be light brown/clear (not dark).
 
The main concern is if the fluids have been changed regularly over the life of the vehicle.  See if they have any receipts.  (I keep my oil change receipts on any car I have to show regular maintenance to prospective buyers when I decide to get rid of a car.)
