cold air intake on '88 mazda 323

I have an '88 mazda 323 I recently bought a cold air intake and installed it just long enough to test it out. Well I tested it and it made my engine sound like it was revving way to much I took it off and it sounded normal again. Is this normal? Am I missing something about cold air intake?
