Hi guys, my girlfriend has an 03' Protege and recently the blower started only running on high. I know on my bmw this problem is caused by a bad blower resistor, is that the same on this car? If so, does anyone know where the part is or know of a writeup to change the part? Thanks for your help, Im a bit new to Mazdas and couldn't find the answer in search.

'Sounds like you're on the right track alright. Where, hmmmm? I would guess in or near the control housing?? Possibly in the heater/blower housing. You'd just have to follow the harness.
Check out your local AutoZone if you have one near you. They can probably bring up an exploded view of the system online as well as order the part for you.

do you mean that it is only on high all of the time, or it only comes on when the setting is on high. if it stays on high all of the time, look behind the controls and see if there is a black line with a little metal clip hanging loose. if there is, that is your problem. just clip it back up where it goes and check it again. if it only comes on when the setting is high, could be the resistor. i would still check out the cable since it is a free fix.

I don't think ledzep is coming back any time soon, but the way he worded his op, it sounds like it only runs on high... like the first 2-3 settings are completely dead.
Probably the resistor.
Do you know where in the Protos it's located? The more I thought about it, the more I thought it might be mounted in the heater box?

Follow-up:
Problem is fixed. It was the blower resistor. The part is located directly behind the glove box, just pop it out and remove the two screws holding it in. The replacement took all of 5 minutes, the part is $30 from the local dealer.
