today, the battery light stayed on when I started the car
then the temperature gauge shot to the top end
Head gaskets?

I would first think you have a broken belt. If the belt is broken, it will not turn the water pump, alternator and the other accessories.

If the timing belt was broken, it would not run at all. I would check the accesory drive belt on the front of the engine.
