I am trying to replace the cv boots on my protege (1.5l engine manual trans) because they are a little cracked but not yet leaking. I was able to disassemble everything but I can't get the axle halves out of the transmission or the intermediate shaft. The manual I have says to pry the shafts out but there is not much room on the drivers side although I tried as hard as I could. On the passengers side I was able place a block of wood against the inner cv joint and hit it with a hammer but it still did not come out. Any suggestions? Is is possible to change the boots without removing the axles?

Thanks,

Mike

Yes you can disasemble the outer joint easily and slide the boot on then reasemble the joint.

The shop manual says you separate by using a brass bar between the drive shaft and the joint shaft.

On the left side, separate by prying with the bar inserted between the outer ring and the transaxle.
